If anyone is considering a trip to Caergwle Castle, - beware. I have been twice in the last 3 weeks on a Tuesday night and each time the game was off – the 1st time due to an apparent waterlogged pitch when it looked ok to me, and this week – no reason – when I got there a group of lads were playing match and no sign of caergwle castle. The secretary doesn’t answer emails and there is no number to contact, while the website doesn’t seem to be updated for a couple of days after the game

Regarding Ken Nisbet's query about Augsburg and the Rosenau: Augsburg has it's own transport system, available on http://efa.avv-augsburg.de/, which says that it is also available in English. I assume that the game will kick off at 6 on Friday, in line with other Friday night games?
The website mentioned recommends taking the Stadtbus 32 from the front of the station, direction Augsburg Klinikum. This takes only a couple of mins to get to Rosenau Strasse, as it's only 0.6 km and they're every 15 mins. I would imagine that others attending the game would be on the same bus. Beware though, arrive early, as they can get some prodigous crowds.
When I went a couple of weeks ago, I'm afraid I drove, so got round the teething bus problems.
A warning about the trains: the ICE and IC (silver) trains require booking before boarding, so for the casual traveller, it's better to use the red trains, which are just as fast, but not so frequent. Augsburg to Munich red trains unfortunately have a big hole in their timetables between 8 and 9 at night, as I found to my chagrin at the weekend.

Anyone got any information on how to get to Augsburg’s stadium from the main railway station there (and indeed back again!)? A group of us are going on holiday to Germany next week (based in Munich), and we might take in the Bundesliga 2 game on the Friday evening.

1/4/08 11:28 George and Maureen Osbourne -
First of all Krakow is a lovely city. Access from the airport is very simple and very cheap. Hotels, certainly the one we stayed in, excellent. Public transport very good and very cheap although the city itself is very walkable. Restaurants universally very good and, in comparison to England, very cheap.
Now the reason for our visit - Cracovia v Gornik Zabrze on Saturday 15 March 2008, kick off 4pm. To make doubly sure of access we explored the area around the ground on Saturday morning. This definitely paid dividends and made it easier for the actual game. The ground is a 10 minute walk from the city centre in a rather downtrodden part of town. We walked the whole way round the ground before we found any evidence of entry turnstiles and ticket offices. We returned at 3pm and bought tickets from a hole in the breezeblock wall. The lady selling the tickets was as helpful as she could be considering we both were fluent in different languages. Erring on the side of caution I opted for tickets in the Tribune, guessing correctly this would be for the main stand. My ticket cost 40 zlotis (approximately £9.00), my wife's 1 zloti (25p)!!!! This is where the fun started.
The ground is a big oval with very little cover (only the Tribune), all the rest of the ground is terracing except for the Tribune side which has seats. After getting settled and then moved on by season ticket holders (no reserved signs on the seats) the match nearly started, only to be delayed for what we at first thought was the national anthem but was in fact the anthem of Cracovia FC. This was taken very seriously, everyone standing, hats off, hands on heart. The game then kicked off. The 2 long sides of the ground both occupied by home supporters then took part in what, without wishing to give offence, came over as a Nuremburg rally. Conducted by 2 guys with their backs to the action on the pitch and taking absolutely no notice of the football. The away fans were sited behind one goal on newish terracing and numbered around 300-400, surrounded by about 100 police in full riot gear. They took absolutely no part in the chanting. Their terracing was at least 50 yards from the goal. The match proceeded for 30 minutes, nothing untoward occurred until with 10 minutes to go to half time all the players suddenly came off the pitch to the dugouts which were in front of us, and started to douse themselves in water. This seemed rather strange as the temperature was about 2 degrees above freezing. All of a sudden the whole of our stand started coughing and we realised that we had been teargassed. Either the fans in the away end had let off the tear gas or the police had teargassed them. Either way over 100 yards away we still got the benefit of it as well. At 62 years old and 50 years of football our first experience of tear gas and one we do not wish to repeat. The match then carried on until just after half time when as if a curtain had come down on them all the away fans disappeared. Ten minutes later numerous buses and police escorts arrived and all the away fans were bussed away from the ground.
The most amazing aspect of this was that it appeared that only my wife and myself took any notice of what was happening. For everyone else it seemed to be part and parcel of a normal football afternoon. The game ended up a 3-0 win to the home side which seemed to ease their relegation worries.
All in all a very interesting and different experience. We personally had no trouble whatsoever, other than a slight after game wheeziness. I wouldn't want anyone to be discouraged from trying Polish football but would suggest you keep your wits about you at all times and buy the dearest seat you can afford.
PS Programmes free for the taking, small 4" x 6" affairs and good quality.

The VERY last game due to be played at St Neots Rowley Park ground was due to take place on Wednesday 2nd April 2008 (KO 7.45pm) when St Neots Town played Stotfold in a UCL Reserve Division 1 match. The new ground is basically ready now, including the floodlights, although no matches will be played on it this season. Entrance is by way of a road running up to it from the existing ground.
The first match at Biggleswade Towns new Carlsberg Stadium, on the Langford Road, is currently set to take place on Friday 9 May 2008 when they play either Stotfold or Langford in the final of the North Beds Charity Cup probably.....if it’s ready on time!

I am in Lisbon on Saturday 19th April for a rock music concert (Porto the night before watching the same band) and would be grateful with help in trying to identify if it possible to get any morning or afternoon games in the capital city on that day and also on the Sunday. Alternatively, any locations on Sunday between Lison and Porto. I understand that fixtures are only available nearer to the time at some (or all) levells. Ideally, I would be interested in lower level leagues

Re Mike Roe's posting on St Mirren, the new ground at Greenhill Road is scheduled to be ready in January 2009 with the club expected to seek dispensation from the SPL to play at Love Street until then.
This week's Pyramid News reports that Rutherglen Glencairn won't be using their new ground until next season to allow the pitch to bed in and that Blantyre Vics may sell Castle Park and move to a (unspecified) new location with an artifical pitch. Evening Times recently reported that Johnstone Burgh, whose Keanie Park ground is plagued by vandalism, were investigating a move to the McMaster Sports Centre which is currently part-time home to amateur side Thorn Athletic. Kirkintilloch Rob Roy have firm plans to move to a new ground for which planning permission has apparently been secured. Finally West Calder United, who have been issuing programmes for some games this season, are expected to move from Burngrange Park to a new home, possibly at the end of the season.

Had the chance to do 3 games in the Illawarra on Good Friday
but just did Wollongong United because wanted to see their new ground.
The other 2 would have been revisits.
However, next week will be Illawarra new-boys, Thirroul FC! Just one station north of Bulli
and directly under the escarpment!

BEDWELL RANGERS of the Herts Senior County League are moving to the old Walkern FC ground next season.
In order to give groundhoppers a final chance to visit their existing ground at the Meadway Playing Fields in Stevenage, Bedwell Rangers have arranged a midweek home fixture against Baldock Town on Tuesday, April 8 with a 6.15pm kick-off. Admission is free and programmes will be on sale at £2.
Please email the club at andyd@bedwellrangersfc.co.uk so that they know how many programmes to print for the game.

Just to let you know that on Easter Saturday St Neots play their last ever first team match at Rowley Park, before they move to their new ground in readiness for next season, when they take on Sleaford Town in a United Counties League Premier Division match, although some reserve matches will be played here after this date.

Edinburgh Counsellors have voted for the demolition of Meadowbank Stadium currently used by Edinburgh City I believe. A new smaller stadium may be built on the site but it's early doors at the moment. As reported in the NL Today, Kirkintilloch Rob Roy also plan to move out of Adamslie Park at the end of the season to a new ground on the Glasgow Road.

The Scottish Junior football scene will be alive and kicking during May and the majority of June so you will have no problems picking up a fixture or two around the end of May. Junior football is totally Saturday only during the dark nights of Winter,( midweek games just don't happen) as the majority of Clubs don't have working floodlights, it'll soon be coming out of its Winter hibernation as the days get longer. With all the rain we've had you'll probably get a game most nights as the glut of waterlogged games are cleared, I've met many a hopper up these parts in June suffering withdrawal symptoms from a lack of football down South.
Is there anywhere in the Country selling ' Groundhopper' scarfs, T shirts and general odds and sods? I was thinking of knocking up a scarf for us neutral 'Hoppers', but not sure if there would be the demand or whether they may already be an outlet supplying them. You can usually spot a football traveller by the rucksack & plastic bag but what about a scarf that would be an instantly recognisable emblem of the 'die hard hopper'?

14/3/08 22:11 Scott Struthers -
To answer John Mollitt yes you should have several games to choose from in
period 19-24 May in Scotland. The juniors will go on until, probably, the
second week in June. The rainy weather has seen a number of postponements
and the midweek programme will start in mid April probably with teams
playing Mon and Wed to catch up. As 24/5 is Scottish Cup final day some junior games that day will have
early kick offs.
Tues 18 March - Central Scottish Amateur League, Colville Park v Leith
Athletic, to be played at Hamilton Accies FC, 8pm.
Tues 25 March - u18 schoolboy international, Scotland v N Ireland, at

A quick note to give an update into the latest ground news in Bundesliga 2. I attended Hoffenheim v Freiburg on 22/02/08, and the latest news in respect of their new stadium is that it should be completed after the Winter break in 2009. Give yourself plenty of time to get to the old ground, it is situated in a very small village and is not the easiest place to find from Sinsheim which is the bigger town nearby. The country roads can get quite congested as they were not really designed to cater for the volume of traffic.
It may also be desirable to try to arrange a ticket prior to attending, but I cant offer any advice as to how to go about this. Most of the games are sold out for home supporters, and I only got in as Freiburg did not sell all of their allocation.
Augsburg have now commenced work on their new stadium, but this is very much in its early stages, and I would presume they will still be playing at their old stadium until the end of 2008/09.
Paderborn finally look to be moving into their new stadium before the end of this season, and expect to play only 3 or 4 more games in the old stadium prior to moving.
In Switzerland St Gallen will move out of what I consider to be one of the finest named in the world, The Espenmoos, at the end of this season.
|
| 10/3/08 09:23 John Mollitt -
I am thinking of taking a short break in the Glasgow? Edinburgh? Ayrshire? Borders? area from 19 May to 24 May. Are there likely to be many/any non league fixtures still being played at that time of the year?

Have only been able to take in one game during my present 1 week sojourn in Japan, Shonan Bellmare v Vegalta Sendai, which resulted in a 1-0 victory for Shonan. There were about 4000 visiting supporters from Sendai in the 10,000 crowd but sadly the game wasn't as exciting as the atmosphere. I wouldn't rate the J2 any higher than the NSW State League so a few ex-A League players should feel at home here in the J2 despite the rather inflated hefty pay-checks!
Today is the day I've been looking forward to. Grilled eel on a bed of rice and seaweed for lunch! Doesn't get any better than that I can tell you!

On 22 Feb, I attended a game at Den Haag (1-1 v Omniworld, attendance less
than 4,000) through a contact and with free car parking. There is a strict
Den Haag season ticket and clubcard system for HOME fans only, although
clubcard holders can buy match tickets on the day. Other clubcards are NOT
accepted ! AWAY fans are "bubbled-in" - ie: as for Cardiff v Wolves FA
Cup tie on 16 Feb, away fans can only attend IF they have travelled on the
away supporters official transport, they have NO other access to the game.
|
| 6/3/08 14:03 Eric Thompson -
I notice that the Dutch have introduced a member's card again - this time in the first division. I have just applied for it myself, but has anybody had any experience of this? Does anybody know an inexpensive way of getting into Den Haag's new ground, without buying one of their club cards (which requires two weeks to produce)

I went to Cracovia v Lech Poznan match on 07.05.06 kick off at 15:00. Attendance was listed at 4,000 & there was no crowd trouble. I was next to the main! stand. Opposite this were the fanatics who jump up & down during the match, if anything like the match I saw at Wisla Krakow they do this on the seats & expect you to join in. Behind one goal was nothing as they appeared to be about to build a new stand. Behind the other goal were the away fans. They appeared to arrive & depart on special buses, with the police surrounding them outside the ground presumably to get them back to the station. The half a dozen matches I have done in Poland I've not seen any crowd trouble although you feel as though something might happen. This included Legia Warsaw v Wisla in 2005. Hope this helps.

6/3/08 10:43 Kenneth Nisbet -
Picking up on George and Maureen Osborne’s post about going to Cracovia vs. Gornik Zabrze.
Haven’t actually been to a game in Krakow, but a group of us were in Warsaw a couple of years ago, and went to the Polonia/Legia derby, and there were all sorts of crowd problems, which were decidedly unpleasant. I think that very weekend the Cracovia game was actually played behind closed doors!
Since this isn’t a derby, then it’ll probably be O.K, but I’d check (you may have already done so) and see if there’s any history of problems with this fixture, and I’d keep an eye on the games leading up to it.
Our contact at Polonia suggested lower league alternatives if we ever went to Krakow. These were Kmita Zabierzów (2nd league) and Hutnik (3rd league) – the former are at home the weekend you mention, the latter have no game.
Hope that helps!

Unfortunately the Cambridge University v Cambridge University Press Match tonight has been postponed. Parts of the pitch are rock solid and icy, there is no sun this morning to start a thaw and in they we now have fog come in to add to very cold conditions.
They will try hard to reschedule the match.
If the forecast is correct they are very optimistic that Thursday afternoon's Match between The Falcons and Newport County FC U.18`s will be played and, more so, Sunday morning's Match ( 10.30 ) between The Blues and The Territorial Army F.A.

18/2/08 14:21 Brian Buck - From Cambridge University: With deep frosts and unhelpful weather forecasts it looks like we may have some problems again!
Tomorrow evening is the first doubt - v Cambridge University Press. Pitch Inspection at 10a.m. tomorrow ( Tuesday.)
For Thursday's Match between The Falcons and Newport County FC Under 18`s a decision will have to be made on Wednesday as NC will leave about 7a.m.
For Sunday's Match v TA, as they are travelling to Cambridge on Friday we may have to make a decision late on Thursday or, at the latest, on Friday Morning to stop them travelling and incurring huge Hotel Bills and travel costs including for some, flights into Stansted.
Hopefully there will be a sudden heat wave!

7/2/08 00:48 Stuart J.Pykett- For those interested Silksworth Community of the Wearside League look to be issuing programmes on a regular basis. They issued for my midweek visit on Wednesday 6th February versus Hartlepool F.C.
It is a computer produced eight pager given away with the £2.00 addmission charge.

5/2/08 12:18 George and Maureen Osborne- I've found postees on this site are very knowledgable and helpful. On this occasion I am seeking info on visiting Cracovia FC in Krakow .I've learned that they are at home weekend 15/3 to Gornick Zabreze. What worries me is that some sites mention the problem of violence at games.I am travelling with the wife and to put it politely we are now of an age where we can't run very fast(or at all).Any comments, thoughts, experiences from travellers would be greatfully received.

4/2/08 19:15 Mark Dawson- Visited Guilsfield FC of Cymru Alliance for their ''giantkilling'' Welsh Cup victory v Caernarfon Town. Their new ground which I was unaware of is directly adjacent to the current ground and looks ready for use. One supporter I spoke to said they are hoping to put seats into the stand and he expects it to be ready for next seaon. However I wouldn't delay if you haven't yet ticked this off. I can confim that the new ground is behind the hedge and in no way overlaps the current ground. |
| 2/2/08 10:02 Mike Floate- The Football Grounds of South East London: I apologise for the delay in publication but a combination of last-minute research becoming necessary to tie down facts on Woolwich Arsenal and also Bostall Heath coupled with my spotting a problem with boxes around photos being wrongly aligned after the proof copy was done have caused a delay. I hope it will prove popular with the new format allowing better use of the excellent photos available. Also any photo taken in colour has been printed in colour! It should be ready for me to collect on Friday Feb 15th (More) |

16/1/08 16:05 Ray Groves - Having been made most welcome at Gap
Queens Park last Saturday, their programme contained an article on the proposed changes to
the Welsh Premier League.
These changes are outlined in a document called 'FAW Strategic Plan 2007-2012' by Alun
Evans and are driven by the belief that the public perception of the league is poor and
that it's national status can be questioned due to the absence of teams from Cardiff,
Swansea and Wrexham. The change of power at UEFA is seen as an ideal opportunity to
introduce the proposed shake up.
The proposal would see the league reduced from 18 to 16 members, possibly as early as next
season, with five clubs thrown out and the big three then being invited to field what
would be effectively second teams. Should they then qualify for the Champions League or
UEFA Cup, they would be free to field their first choice teams in those competitions.
The report states that the present set up is "absolutely detrimental" to Welsh
football and that the inclusion of the big three would enhance the league in terms of
attendances, playing and refereeing standards, better stadia and results in Europe.
The Gap Queens Park article observes that the Welsh Premier clubs will almost certainly be
unanimously opposed to the idea but that the FAW could force through the proposal with
their casting vote. |

- Any traveller looking to visit Serbia when their winter break is over may not be aware
that because of the National Team's failure to qualify for Euro 2008 the re-start date has
been put back two weeks so the matches scheduled for 15.02 are now going to be played
01.03. If anybody wants to see high drama its Crvena Zvezda v Partizan that weekend ! Also
I understand that Superliga newcomers FK Cukariki are using FK Oblics ground rather than
their own though that needs checking. |
