Does anybody know if AFC Barnsley have switched their home ground to the main Barnsley FC
stadium from the Barnsley FC Academy Ground. It seems that all the fixtures I have seen
listed for the club in text lately refers to the venue for home games as being Oakwell
Stadium although I'm aware the two venues are in close proximity. Any information
gratefully received. |

Following Chris Ashbridge's reference to the Algarve Stadium, can anyone confirm if the
ground is currently used by a club side? I went there for an England friendly a couple of
years ago and I'd be interested to know if it's being used regularly. |

On Saturday 18th February, I saw LSS Lucarly's defeat a poor Harworth side 6-0. Chatting
to a home official, he advised the pitch they played on had been used for the last six
games or so. Checking afterwards with Mick Burt's report in vol 19,issue 9, the pitch is
the one referred to by Mick as the sunday pitch. This is further away from the dressing
rooms, at right angles to the near one, and there is no overlap. The current one is quite
a bit wider & has a little more air of permanence, in that behind both goals there are
fixed metal barriers, with a canvas screen behind one separating from the rugby pitch.
There are new wooden dugouts and the temporary barrier now is the length of the near side,
with a high mesh fence behind the other. A 12 page colour programme was issued. The home
team are in third with a chance of promotion, although I have my doubts the ground would
be god enough. The club official did suggest they may have an alternative venue in mind,
although I seem to recall similar sentiments from near-neighbours Grimsby Borough. |

Following Christopher Ashbridge a further note on Portuguese football. We were in Madeira
for a few days stay last week, and I was able to take in the Portuguese SuperLiga game
between Maritimo and Vitoria Guimaraes on Monday 13th Feb. Presumably it was the televised
game. Football wasn't in the original itinerary, but the game was advertised in our hotel,
and you can't look a gift horse in the mouth! I got a ticket at the hotel for 30 Euros,
though I suspect money could be saved buying tickets from the club. Plenty of space at the
ground as there were no more than 3,000 at the game, though presumably the top clubs would
draw more. I presume the top hotels take a block of tickets for each game, but they
weren't taken up for my visit as my section seemed sparsely occupied. Maritimo have a club
shop in the centre of Funchal, not far from the Cable Car terminus. The ground, Estadio
dos Barreiros, is in the western part of Funchal, north of the Lido, and is an athletics
stadium with covered seats on one side and the rest uncovered seats, with very few seats
at the ends. It's not dissimilar to the Withdean Stadium in some ways. The game itself was
a pretty dire contest with the struggling visitors winning 1-0, Maritimo having two sent
off. Objects thrown from the crowd after the second dismissal cost the club 800 Euros! I
would imagine that the island clubs are well sponsored as I couldn't see Maritimo getting
by on the size of crowd that I saw. British Airways have a regular service to Funchal from
Gatwick, two flights a day I believe. TAP also fly to and from Gatwick. |

With below-average temperatures forecast for Sat 11th Feb, I decided to spend the weekend
in Portugal, where the temperatures (almost 20 centigrade at times) were actually the
highest I have ever experienced in February anywhere. However, as I did not want to stay
over till Monday morning, I had to plan things carefully in order to be able to catch the
19.55 Easyjet flight from Faro to Gatwick on Sunday. My Saturday match was the only option
for a 'new' ground - Academica Coimbra v. Boavista (0-2) at the athletics stadium that had
been rebuilt for Euro 2004. It kicked off at 7.15pm, and prior to it I had the unusual
opportunity to watch Middlesbrough v. Chelsea (3pm) and Portsmouth v. Man Utd (5.15pm)
live on TV screens in the new shopping centre that forms part of the stadium complex.
After the game, I travelled on the 10pm coach to Lisbon from the bus station, the last
train having departed at 21.27 which would have required a taxi ride as the stadium is a
long walk from the main railway station. On Sunday I travelled by train from Lisbon to
Olhao (near Faro) to watch the 2nd division match between SC Olhanense and Estoril. The
home team are pushing for promotion to the top flight and if they suceed, it will be
interesting to see how their ground copes as it only holds 6,000 at present - perhaps they
might use the new Algarve Euro 2004 stadium? By the way, no programmes or club magazines
available at either game although this did not really come as a surprise. A few more
points - 1) I would recommend taking in a 2nd division game on the Sunday in order to
'save' the 1st division clubs for Saturday evenings as 2nd division games all seem to be
played only on Sundays. There is also usually a 1st division game live on TV on Monday
evenings. 2) At many grounds, entry to the main stand is restricted to club members so you
may have to go on the far side although at Olhanense I carefully picked the right moment
to show my far side ticket to a distracted gateman to get into the main stand! 3)Finding
out details of the Sat/Sun timings of games on the internet is difficult and you may have
to trawl through individual club websites, unless you are able to purchase a copy of the
previous Sunday/Monday's 'A Bola' sports paper in London's West End. |

With reference to Andy's note about the Portishead V Larkhall game on the 31st December. I
didn't fair any better, I got one from the Saltash game on the 14th January. Looks like

disapointing as we all paid for the correct one. |

With the permission of the club, I shall producing a programme for the Lincolnshire Junior
Cup Semi Final between Fulbeck United (Lincoln League) and AFC Friendship (Gainsborough
League) on Saturday. Fulbeck is just off the A17, midway between Newark & Sleaford.
The club play at the Sports Ground, located on the A607 main road through the village.
There is a large clubhouse which the football club shares with cricket and the game kicks
off at 2:15pm. |

The missing programme from the Portishead v Larkhall game on 31st December
finally arrived yesterday(Wed 8th).The only problem was that it was for a match v
Shrewton,played on January 21st ! I would rather have received nothing,than get a
programme from a totally irrelevant match, although some people do like to get an old copy
if one hasnt been issued for the match they attend.Dont know if anyone else got the proper
one?,or were old copies sent out to all of us? On a better note,2 extra fixtures for this
Sunday(not been checked)in the Seaton Challenge Cup 2nd Round. Awliscombe v East
Budleigh,and Honiton Town v Sidbury. |

Re Steve Broughton and Bruce Robertson - Sunday games in Glasgow / Scotland. You
will always get SFL u17 and u19 Youth League matches, the fixtures are always in saturday
morning's daily Record, although a phone cal to the SFL will also tell you what is on, if
it isn't on their website. You will also normally get a live TV first team game in the SPL
too and the occasional junior / non-league game. Below u17 level, you will get a host of
senior clubs playing from u11s and u12s (both sat mornings normally) and u13 - u19 all on
Sundays, best check club youth websites for them or call the SFA on a Friday afternoon. |

In response to Steve Broughtons request on London League and London Legal League, the
standard is the same as watching Amateur Football Combination,Arthurian League etc. Some of
the venues are better than others. They are all artificial, some water based, some sand
based[Paddington Rec has one of each]There are normally refreshments to be found, but not
in all cases.I've never come across a programme. |
 |
6/2/06 Steve Broughton
Has anyone been to games in the London League or the London Legal League? They have
regular floodlit midweek games on artificial pitches, and as I may be in the London area
next week I might go to one. What's the standard like? |
 |
6/2/06 Kerry Miller
Reference the posts on Portishead FC. For those a little confused, up until last season
(the club's last in the Somerset Senior League, they played on the pitch just to the right
of the old tennis courts, now semi-derilict and used as a car park. They had for a number
of years a breeze block stand which stood where the scruffy looking portacabins are now,
and as a matter of interest now lies in a heap to the left of the car park having been
knocked down and dumped. The first team also played a few games on the pitch in the corner
behind the new set up, and are now on the pleasant and purpose built pitch which runs
along the top of th complex, so for those anoraks among us, they are three pitch sites,
none of which overlap, therefore three new grounds! Don't hold your breath for a programme
as I was at the Senior Cup quarter-final with Bridgwater Town and there was none printed
for that match. |

Re; Paul Broadhurst's query - although I have not yet been to Malaga, I do have a map
which was supplied to me by a fellow groundhopper. I can send you a photocopy, please
email christopherashbridge@yahoo.com. *** Important note - I was told by the other
groundhopper that Malaga's ground is currently being rebuilt along one side, therefore it
may be best to put this one off until next season.)
Yesterday, as I thought it was a bit too cold to go to France or Belgium, I made a daytrip
by Ryanair to Valencia-based 2nd division club Levante UD for their home game against
Ferrol (result 2-1).I could have gone by Easyjet, but their return flight departs 35 mins
earlier and so I wanted to be sure of getting back to the airport on time, particularly as
the metro extension (yes, Valencia does actually have an underground system) has not yet
been completed and you need to catch a bus. Levante's ground (a 7 minute walk from the
nearest metro station) is an impressive all-seated 28,000 capacity venue and as there are
three different prices available for the main stand, my advice is to buy the cheapest one
(25 euros) and you will be able to sit anywhere you like in that stand as there are plenty
of empty seats. A welcome bonus was a glossy colour A5 programme given away free behind
the main stand. So, a great day out and a few more tips from me - 1) the match kicked off
at 5.30pm (due to TV) rather than the more usual time of 5pm, so if you go for a 5pm ko,
you should be able to get back in time for the Easyjet flight. 2) While on the subject of
ko times, remember that in Spain, exact Sat/Sun timings are not announced until a week in
advance, so don't be tempted to book your flights too far in advance. |

: Today i went to the West Wales Senior Cup Quarter Final between Winch Wen, of
the Swansea League, and Haverfordwest County of the Welsh Premier League.Winch Wen play in
Carmel Road,Swansea, opposite The Halfway pub.An 8 page programme was issued for todays
match(quid with admission) which was won 6-3 by the visitors in front of 158 spectators.
Another QF tie of note is Ragged School v Swansea City, which according to the West Wales
FA website is to be played by Sunday February 12th,although the Ragged School Secretary
informed me this date has yet to be confirmed. The game is due to be played at RTB
Landore,Beaufort Road,Swansea, which is where i saw them comfortably beat Seven Sisters of
the Welsh League Division 3 in the last round. |

re Malaga - get the train from airport into centre of Malaga - this is just a
couple of euros - it's then a fair walk north away from sea to ground - however it's just
as easy to grab a taxi as they are cheap - Malaga is an excellent opportunity to visit on
a day trip as you can get early flight out and late flight home though it is a bit of a
waste not to take advantage and stay a while! |

Today I took advantage of Boroughbridge being drawn at home in the quarter finals of both
the WRCFA Challenge Cup and the WRCFA Challenge Trophy. The first team played Golcar Utd
on the main pitch whilst the reserves played East End Park WMC(first and only team)on the
pitch in the grounds of the adjacent Primary school. The 16 page programme (£1) gave
equal prominence to both games with full team line ups and potted histories of both
visiting teams. The Trophy game I watched finished 3-1 to Boroughbridge and, bizarrely,
many of the crowd at the Cup game spent much of the time peering over the hedge at our
game rather than concentrating on theirs. |

In reply to Bruce Robertson - one option for Sunday games in Scotland is the Scottish
League Youth Under 19 Division. This Sunday there are scheduled matches at Albion Rovers,
Alloa, Berwick, Cowdenbeath, Elgin, Queens Park, Stirling Albion and St Mirren. Kick-off
times vary but are often lunchtime/early afternoon. The Scottish League website may be
updated with times before Sunday but I wouldn't bank on it
(http://www.scottishfootballleague.com/scottish_football_league.cfm?showtype=match&show=youth19bymonth&init=Y&curpageid=1090)
For venues and times it's best to contact the clubs direct. Queens Park usually play at
Lesser Hampden which would be a good option if you're in Glasgow. Further afield, there
are two BUSA University games scheduled this Sunday - St Abndrews v Abertay and Dundee v
Stirling. |

Re-arranged Chelmsford City fixture - home versus Margate (Isthmian Lge Prem) is now
Friday 3 March 2006 (ko 7-45).
A sorry end to last nights (Mon 30 Jan) Chelmsford City's Essex Senior Cup Semi Final
versus Braintree Town which was abandoned after 65 mins due to a mass player brawl.
Although I don't know whether anything had been said from the City bench, it seemed to all
go off after a Brintree player shoved City manager Craig Edwards. All players and both
benches got involved in some way and I genuinely felt for referee Keith Yeo. He clearly
didn't want to continue and after a delay when both Chairman were apparently trying to
change his mind, he finally took the decision to send us all home ! Over then to the Essex
FA ! For the record, Braintree were ahead 2-0. |

Further to the message from Nick Bainbridge, I visited Forest Town on Saturday
and they are indeed playing on the 'top pitch'. The top pitch is in fact the old cricket
ground that still has a resident scoreboard. It is fully enclosed and has steeply banked
terracing on part of one side, backed by a recently refurbished patio area complete with
tables and chairs. The terracing was probably once the home of seating for the cricket. A
Forest Town official said they had played there since around November and would continue
to do so as far as he knew ! The club issued their normal informative programme. Further
to the comment on Limestone Rangers resigning from the Lincolnshire League, I can confirm
they continue to field a side (struggling) in the Scunthorpe & District League, in
case anyone still wishes to visit this rural setting in Willoughton, near Kirton Lindsey.
Fixtures can be found on the fa full time website. Be careful where you search as the
Scunthorpe League is not under S or even under F (for Fallen Hero - the sponsors) but
actually under the letter A !!!. |

30/1/06 Chris Ashbridge
Barcelona - based club L'Hospitalet (of the Spanish 3rd division, confusingly
known as division '2A') have been playing on a new ground since 1999, in case you hadn't
realised. I visited their new ground yesterday (Sun 29th Jan) as part of a weekend trip to
Spain. Although I had visited their old ground (now covered by apartment blocks) almost
exactly 10 years previously, in March 1996, I did some diligent checking and found out
about the move. But to start from the beginning - my first match of the weekend was a
6.30pm kick-off at Gimnastic Tarragona, an hour by train from Barcelona. The ground is not
easy to find, being located among steep hills to the north-east of the town and I only
arrived some 35 mins before ko. Please note that although the ground is called the 'New
Stadium' (when translated from Spanish, obviously)it is not all that new, I would guess it
was built sometime in the 1970s or early 1980s. (If anyone knows more about this, please
advise.) In front of a crowd of 5,605, the match finished 0-0, which was not good news
following my visit to Hadley on Wednesday! I have never seen 3 goalless draws in a row
(surely justification for suicide) so it was with a certain amount of trepidation that I
approached the noon ko at L'Hospitalet on Sunday. Mercifully, my prayers for a goal were
answered as the visitors scored after just 5 mins and went on to win 2-1. The new stadium,
called Feixa Llarga, is a very impressive 8,000 all-seated affair, although surprisingly,
the pitch is synthetic (which was probably just as well as there appeared to have been
some very heavy rain overnight.) It was opened in March 1999 and is a 10 minute walk from
the last station at the western end of metro line 1 (the red line) Finally, my third match
was a 5pm ko at the Montjuic (Olympic) Stadium where I saw Espanyol defeat Malaga 3-1.
Espanyol have plans for a new stadium, although this will probably not be until 2007-08 at
the earliest. (While on this subject, I believe Valencia also plan to move at a similar
time.) So, all in all, a good weekend in Spain. Various types of programmes or club
magazines were available at all 3 games - details will appear in my 'Programme Monthly'
column in due course. |

Having enjoyed the Hadley match last night at the athletics track in St Albans, I have

Len S and I were at Romford last night - the only highlight being the news in the
programme that London APSA are moving in to the Terence MacMillan stadium ,281 Prince
Regent Lane, Newham (with access to the stadium from Maybury Road) with the first match on
Saturday 4 February against Southend Manor. |
 |

Regarding Peter Ford's post, isn't Syon Lane where the club are currently based?
(different entrance though when used by Harrow Hill Rovers, hence different address.) I
think the purchase is simply to gain security of tenure over their present ground. |

Real Madrid Castilla are now playing their Segunda Divisie games at Ciudad Deportiva
(Sporting Centre) which is a new development not far from Barajas Airport. One side is
fully seated with a small amount of cover for dignatories only. Further seating is
available behind one goal and half the oppostive side. Capacity is around 2,500 - for the
match I saw against Numancia the gate was quoted as 2,000 which I though a huge
over-estimation. However this pitch will be replaced, probably next season, by a larger
stadium being built just behind the present one. |

According to the Bishops Castle Town website, this Sunday(Jan 29) sees the first round of
the Bishops Castle Charity Cup. draw- Bishops Castle Town V Newbridge,Knighton Town Res. V
Churchstoke,Craven Arms Town V Newcastle and Montgomery V Dyffryn Banw. I dont know if
these games are confirmed yet,so they would need checking first. On another subject,I was
one of a dozen or so travellers who went to Portishead on New Years Eve. No programme was
issued, but everyone who paid a quid and left their address was promised a copy be posted
on (the programme was done, but the photo copier had broken down that morning), however 3
weeks on, nothing has arrived. Has anyone else received anything? I must say when last
doing this, Holyport had sold out 12-Apr 2004, the promised programme duly arrived 4 days
later! |

While I was in Paris yesterday, I noticed an interesting item in a newspaper, which may be
of interest to anyone planning to watch next weekend's French Cup tie between St.Genevieve
and Calais. Apparently, the ground capacity has been set at 1,600 and Calais have been
allocated only 120 tickets. Consequently, it is possible that this match may be a
sell-out, given the popularity of the French Cup and the home side's inability, or
reluctance, to switch the game to a bigger stadium. |

Further to my entry of 16/01/06, I made an Eurostar daytrip to Paris yesterday to
watch Levallois lose 1-3 at home to Viry-Chatillon in a CFA2 match. As stated on
www.fff.fr, the venue was not Levallois's usual ground (which is situated very close to
the inner city boundary) but a temporary venue in Gennevilliers, which turned out to be
where their reserve/youth teams, plus their tennis section, are based. It appears that
they will be playing there for the rest of the current season. (It is not clear why they
have moved, but as there are so many stadiums in France, it is commmonplace for local
councils to close one at a time for maintenance or improvement work to be carried out.)
There is no cover for spectators, although there is slight banking on one side of the
pitch, which is enclosed by a modern infilled railing of the type often found in France.
No programme was issued, although this didn't come as a surprise, given that they had also
failed to issue on my visit to their main ground some 5 years. Good news for ticket
collectors though is that the standard issue tickets sold at all CFA/CFA2 matches now
include the name of the home club printed neatly on the face. I'm not sure whether many of
you will want to 'tick' a venue without cover, but anyone interested should ask me for a
photocopy of a map, as the ground is mysteriously omitted from all the maps I have seen
and it is also a fair walk from the nearest RER/metro stations. Incidentally, I took the
opportunity to walk past an interesting old stadium (in the adjoining suburb of
Villeneuve-la-Garenne) which was used by Stade Francais when they were in the 2nd division
in 1982-83, which sadly was a few years before I started groundhopping abroad. It is still
used regularly for local football though. |

I visited Hounslow Borough on Saturday - playing in the same complex as they were about 4
years ago, but on a completely different pitch. According to the programme, the President
of the club has bought 23 acres of land in Syon Lane (I imagine that will cost a bob or
two), and the club are now going to consider relodcating to a new ground there, with
floodlights. They are planning to groundshare next season if they do secure promotion. A
4-2 win on Saturday (all goals in the first half) will have done them no harm in that
direction |

The very short and boring answer to the query on why some clubs don't let on as to where
their Youth teams play is the "Child Protection Act". Basically anyone involved
with players 17 and under should be vetted and regsitered before they can get involved
(including referees - confirmed by paragraph in O.F.A. handbook). Some pro clubs stick
rigidly to the rules and less people at games involving 17 and unders means less chance of
an infringement of the rules. |

I can tell Kerry Miller that he is not alone in not getting any information from
Portsmouth about where their Academy side play. I had the same problem at Derby who said
they wouldn't tell me where their game was being played as they don't encourage spectators
to watch them. Seems strange that when they produce a proper match programme for every
game. Anyone know what is behind this? |
 |
19/1/06 Kerry Miller
Reference Saturday morning youth games, it is always a good idea to completely ignore
press and website info as there is often a change of venue or kick-off right up to the
night before. The Bristol City website religiously gives their kick-off times as 11am at
Abbots Leigh but they rarely do, as it could be anything from 11.30am to 1pm, depending on
who they are playing. Team sheets available in the upstairs area beforehand. At
Southampton, they always play at 11am at the old RS Southampton ground at Marchwood which
is superb and has the original stand and has been Saints training centre for ages. Team
sheets usually but they tailed off towards the end of last season. Bristol Rovers play on
pitch 2 at AXA, the Glos County League ground at 11am, so if you time it right you could
do the two pitches one after the other. This is at Cribbs Causeway, next to Clifton Rugby
ground. Beware that some clubs now play Sat morning games behind closed doors. I have had
poblems at Reading, who needed me to apply for press accreditation and Portsmouth who
refuse to divulge where their games are. However, a quick call to the opposition usually
solves that one. Finally, Yeovil play their games outside Huish Park on the training
pitch, and if you don't fancy the Glovers, Westland Sports is 2 mins away |

Thanks for those who responded to my bit about Sat morning u-18 games...sorry Im new to
this noticeboard thing so have been a bit slow in responding. Molins Sports is in Princes
Risbrough in Mill Lane...but I saw Wycombe there years ago (that's for travelleur
extraordinaire Chris Ashbridge), and for Tony Incenzo Ive had programmes over the years at
Wycombe, Colchester, Crystal Palace when they were at the National Sports Centre, but more
recently they were back to a team sheet having taken over the old CUACO ground,Chelsea at
Imperial College's ground, and of course the one that you mentioned: West Ham...otherwise
it's team sheets...if you are lucky, because they are often pretty hard to track down
(Southampton and Birmingham City, it was a fluke). Ive seen Stoke juniors at Newcastle
Town but I dont know of any other that use non-league grounds...did Bolton use Accrington
for a while? but the Garrison ground in Gillingham is a gem, and Iffley Road in Oxford,
albeit an athletics stadium still has a fine stand and is obviously steeped in history. The
O's use Eton Manor's old ground where you can see traces of old terracing. But it is hard
to keep up with which ground is being currently used, so much of what I am saying may be
hopelessly out of date...you really have to check with the club in the week of the game
that you want to see.(Do Brentford still play out in Tolworth?) Anyway Im really grateful
for the info that this has flushed out, and obviously welcome any more, either regarding
enclosed grounds or programmes. |

Saturday 14th January 2006 - Great Wyrley 4, Ludlow Town 1 - West Midlands (Regional)
League Premier Division - Att : est 50 - Admission £3.00 including 8pp. On Saturday 14th
January I ventured up to the West Midlands to see unbeaten Great Wyrley take on mid-table
Ludlow Town. I travelled to Birmingham by train and took the 13.12 local train to
Landywood station, this being an hourly service from New Street at 12 mins past each hour
journey time about 30-35 mins. Coming back again it is an hourly service into New Street
at 34 mins past each hour. The club's Hazel Lane ground is about a 10 minute walk from
Landywood station. On arrival I paid £3.00 admission including a basic 8 page unstapled
programme that had an attractive card cover in the club's colours of red & black. On
talking to an official, Great Wyrley have now gone over 50 games unbeaten when including
the end of last season, and their record this season before this match of 13 wins, 10
draws and no defeats suggested a comfortable win against mid-table Ludlow Town but a less
than inspiring 1st half saw few chances but the home team went in a goal up at the
interval! . However the 2nd half was a different story, and despite a controversial
equaliser by the visitors, Great Wyrley stepped up a gear and dominated the game to
eventually win 4-1 to extend their unbeaten run. The ground is not too bad, being north of
Walsall but away from the bustle having quite a scenic setting of hills and countryside on
one side. As you enter there is a large clubhouse and function room behind the goal beyond
the car park, and a busy tea bar area outside did a brisk trade in hot food and drinks
etc. In the corner next to the clubhouse is a covered area with bench seating where you
can either stand or sit. The club have floodlights and the pitch is railed off on all
sides of the ground. There is a reasonable pub about 200 yards past the ground called The
Star which served Banks's Original and a guest beer on handpump and an enjoyable day was
rounded off back in Birmingham after the game with a few pints in what must be one of the
best pubs in Britain v! ery near New Street Station - The Wellington in Bennetts Hill
which had their usual 15 handpumps on selling excellent real ale from a number of
breweries. |

To Dave Woodings and others, re UD San Pedro, Spanish Regional (Andalucian) Div
3. I was there on Tuesday, it is Estadio Municipal in the town of San Pedro de Alcantara,
just along from the resort of Puerto Banus. The ground is three sided, with a high built
covered centre section of the main stand, at the middle of the pitch, sitting atop light
brown painted high terraced steps /seats, just continuous concrete. Opposie the main stand
and behind goal to left all same, high stepped terrace, which you can also sit on. The
left hand goal is virtually similar to that at Stirling Albion's Forthbank Stadium. They
average crowds of 300 I'm told. They frequently play Malaga or Seville in friendlies. |

Newcastle, Sunderland and Middlesboro Juniors usually play on the accademy pitches rather
than using non league grounds. This sometimes does happen if double booked or because of

Leon Gladwell writes regarding fixtures in the north of Holland. If you know that ONS are
going to be at home, whilst you are there, my suggestion of ACV Assen will be no good as
they seem to alternate home fixtures with ONS. However should it be a week when ONS are
away it is to be recommended. ACV have two covered stands along one side of the ground and
always produce a very good programme. I would imagine all clubs in this league issue
however. As lesser levels LTC also in Assen and de Weide of Hoogeveen issue 8 page
programmes, which double as raffle tickets. At de Weide you get 3 programmes for 1.
If you are prepared to wait there are dozens of spares available for free after the raffle
draw. By the way ACV play in one of the stadia alongside the de Smeldt Ice Stadium about
half an hour walk along the ring road, turning left out of the station. Wherever you go,
have a great time. |

The International Community School in London at which I am the Bursar has for several
years been running environmental trips for the students to such locations as the Maldives,
Galapagos, Amazon Rain Forest, etc. We are now considering whether to extend this facility
to special interest groups such as ornithology or indeed football ! To that end I was
considering trips to countries with a good football pedegree but which present some
difficulties when trying to arrange visits. Serbia with Crvena Zvezda (Red Star) and
Partizan certainly fall into that category. Also in the school we have several Serb
speakers which should make arrangements that much easier. The trip would be over a
weekend, based in Belgrade with matches at one of the big two plus hopefully a couple of
other games. Prices would be dependant upon numbers but every effort would be made to keep
costs down. I don't know whether there would be any interest but if anybody fancies a

It was interesting to read what Richard Rundle said about Portishead having used a
differnet pitch in the past. However, the covered accomodation at the old pitch has been
demolished (if it was there at all in the first place) as there is no visible trace of it.
Also, I did not see a cricket square or any cricket sightscreens, only a couple of other
footballl pitches. Interestingly, one of these is at an awkward angle to the newly
enclosed 'new' pitch, and in one place the touchline of the old pitch is so close that
players running too fast out of play run a slight risk of colliding with the barnd-new
steel fence! Defintely worth 'ticking' (or revisiting, depending on your own rules) even
if you've already been there for a Somerset Senior League game. Oh, and by the way, I had
a good trip yesterday to Bradford Town for their 1-0 win over Cadbury Heath, which leaves
me with only Longwell Green of the trio of newcomers to do. Nice glossy programme came
free with the £4 admission and it was particularly satisfying to have 'ticked' a venue
which I had missed out in its brief Hellenic League stint in the mid-1980's. |

Ground updates - Cadbury Heath appear to be planning to upgrade their training facilities
at Walker Playing Fields (wherever they are), and include floodlights. Biddestone are
hoping to have lights in place for the start of next season. The pitch will be moved some
20 yards to the left (as you look from the clubhouse), to avoid the cricket pitch.
Finchampstead are still planning to move the other side of the hedge, away from the road,
and hope eventually to get floodlights. I was also told that Shrewton's lights will be
ready by March |

Re: Chris Ashbridge's comments on Portishead - they did indeed use a different pitch in
the same complex until a couple of years ago. It was near the entrance and clubhouse, and
had (if I remember correctly) a brick built white-painted covered area, split into several
sections. The pitch overlapped with substantial portions of the cricket outfield, so the
football club have moved to an area of their own, which as Chris says has had some money
spent on it. The club have apparently made a (second?) application for planning permission
for floodlights. |

BISHOP'S LYDEARD seem to have adapted well following their advancement from the Taunton
Saturday League and, midway through the club's third season at the higher level, are now
well placed in Division Two of the Somerset County League. The club is based at Darby Way
which is on the Cothelstone Road a short walk from the village centre. I gather that most
strangers approaching by car from the village turn into Darby Way and are puzzled not to
find a football ground. I was one of these! Darby Way is the name of a housing estate and
the road running around it. The football club is found a little further along the main
road where the marked entrance leading into a car-park is on the right. On the other side
of the road is an alternative pitch used by local/junior sides and also owned by Bishop's
Lydeard FC. The main pitch is railed along most of the near side and there is a section of
wooden fencing opposite where good sized concrete block dug outs are positioned. Behi! nd
them, and at right angles to the first team pitch, a further playing area can be seen and
this is used by juniors - including girls - and Sunday teams. Conifer trees have been
grown behind both ends and on part of the far side. On the near side, the old stone
dressing-rooms are very basic but there is a section of concrete standing beneath an
overhanging roof extension where 30 or so spectators could be comfortably accommodated.
Planning permission was granted almost two years ago for this structure to be
extended/modernised, but to date no progress has been made. Visitors Peasedown Athletic
are in dire straits at present and recently failed to raise a side for a fixture against
Dundry. No games have been won so far and the club's immediate target is to simply survive
until the end of the season and then regroup. The game I saw was sadly very one sided and
Bishop's Lydeard were 7-0 up by half time with all seven being scored by Lee ("I
don't train") Hellier. After missing a sitter early in the second period, Lee gave
way to one of the club's promising youngsters and a further 4 goals were added. At the
final whistle, 3 cheers were exchanged - rugby fashion - by each team which isn't seen in
senior soccer too often. Nice touch though. Potential visitors will be encouraged to note
that games are very rarely called off here. After heavy morning rain and continuing
showers later on, there were no problems whatsoever and the surface remained firm.

Chelmsford City have received the nod to play their first game back in the county town
this coming Monday 2 January 2006, kick off 3pm. Chelmsford Borough Council's Melbourne
Park Athletics Centre (official title) will host the Isthmian League Premier Division
match against City's recent landlords Billericay Town. The roll-on-roll-off terracing is
in place behind the goals and with a new pitch inside the perimeter of the athletics
track, a new 1000 seat stand, improved boundary fencing, and new toilets, turnstiles and
catering units, its looking good for the 3000 capacity venue. There have also been minor
alterations to floodlighting and athletic field facilities and the football club have met
the costs of a new clubhouse, changing rooms and social facilities on land leased to them
by the Council. The crowd will probably be above average in size for the first game but
tickets will be available on the turnstiles on the day. Tickets cost £8.00 and £5.00 for
concessions. Unfortunately, I can't be there on Monday as the Wolves are playing at
Coventry City's Ricoh Arena the same afternoon. No doubt I will get along to a midweek
game there soon. |

In answer to Scott Strothers, a bit of research on www.futbolme.com and www.faf.es
(Andalucian Federation) reveals that San Pedro U. D. play at the Campo Municipal in San
Pedro al Cantara and are in Group 3 of the 1st Division of the Andalucia Regional League
(immediately below Tercera i. e. Level 5). But they do not appear to have a website and
there are no ground guides etc. on the above websites. From my experience at this level
pitches can be anything from good old fashioned grass to artificial to impacted sand !
Incidentally, Scott, whom are you playing against ? |

Further to my entry of 23/12/05, I attended the Portishead v. Longwell Green match (2pm)
on Tuesday 27th December. The games at Sevenoaks, Sittingbourne and Oxhey were all played,
but the reports of snow which helpfully omitted to mention that the snowfalls were
actually restricted to a small part of Kent had deterred me from going there. The only
Kent League game to be called off was at Hythe. There was some frost (and even a very thin
covering of snow in one place!) visible from the National Express coach I travelled on
from London, but it had all gone by the time I reached Bristol. Portishead is easily
reached by hourly buses on public holidays and they go past the ground's entrance.
Admission was £4 and an informative 24-page programme sold for a further £1, with the
visitors winning an undistinguished game with a late goal. Portishead seem to have spent
plenty of money on making their ground fully enclosed and there is a proper turnstile as
well, although the presence of Portakabin-type dressing rooms suggests that they may have
been using one of the other pitches on the ground in their Somerset Senior League days,
particularly as the one they are using now is some way from the clubhouse. |

Yesterday's weather did its best to try and thwart my first Bank Holiday 'double'
for several years not involving a Stafford Rangers game. Snow in the East Midlands put an
end to my first plan (though the game at Bolsover was played but Southwell wasn't) and a
frozen pitch forced a postponment at Hook Norton. But, in the end, I had an enjoyable day
with entertaining games on two new grounds. There were several travellers at Cadbury Heath
for the noon kick-off against Almondsbury FC in which the home side came from behind to
win 2-1 with late goals (att 82). Then, I made a comfortable 25 miles drive back up the M5
to watch Slimbridge 3 Almondsbury Town 1 (att 102). Programmes were issued at both clubs. |

Can anyone tell me anything about the ground of Spanish club San Pedro, in the Malaga
area. Just that Hamilton Accies will be playing a German side there in a fortnight!
Also, I was at Nairn County (v Clach on Tues 27th) - excellently run place, nice ground,
free lime green teamsheets and regular programme issuers should anyone be going there.

Trevor, for Austrian league information, go to www.bundesliga.at, then click on the word
Termine in the menu bar at the top of the page. From the next page, select the
competitions of interest to you, I would suggest T-Mobile Bundesliga (top division), Red
Zac Erste Liga (2nd division) and Stiegle Cup - Manner, (FA Cup), fill in start and finish
dates and click on Afrage Starten for a full set of fixtures What you will find is a
series of second division matches on Friday night, and a series of top division games on
Saturday night. You may find a lower game on Saturday afternoon or Sunday, quite a few at
the regionalliga level are fridays. Nearer the date, you will discover if a match has been
switched to Sunday, and if you have picked a cup week. Ask me (via the Message Board if
you need more and cannot find it! |

AUSTRIA TRIP I'm currently planning one of my regular European sorties for beer, music and
football (probably in that order!) and will be in Salzburg and Vienna from 5.4.06 to

Rapid Vienna v Wacker Tirol. I'd appreciate any thoughts or advice from those of you with
relevant experience. Early days, I know, but I booked my flight from Stansted today and am
now looking at train schedules between Salzburg and Vienna. Isn't planning great?! |

Re; doubles on Dec 27th - I am planning to do Sevenoaks at 11am, then Oxhey Jets
at 3pm (although this one needs to be confirmed, as their website does not do so) or
possibly Sittingbourne at 3pm, although the latter is dependent upon someone offering me a
lift. (It is true that I could easily do all these 3 clubs for evening games, but I prefer
watching games in daylight.) If inland frost is a problem, I may try Portishead at 2pm,
although current forecast suggests possible overnight cloud cover along east coast on
Boxing Day, hopefully going into the 27th. |

23/12/05 Chris Bedford
Tony - there is a treble on Dec 27th in the East Midlands, involving Bolsover
(12), CML match (3) and Lincoln United (7.45) but I've not confirmed these games. Also I
suspect that Godmanchester is reachable from a 3 pm Central Midlands League game. |

Re the KVV Ardennen Christmas Day fixture, this is now shown on www.footbel.com in two
different places as a 1400 KO on Saturday 24th December. No other Oost-Vlanderen
Provincial 1 games are listed for either 24th or 25th December, though at 2nd Provincial
level there are five Christmas Day matches in total (all at 1430) across Divisions 2a and
2b. There are also a handful of games in the 3rd and 4th Provincial divisions, again all
at 1430. |
 |
22/12/05 Chris Ashbridge
Re; Peter Abbott's message - the postponement at Ardennen (and any lower division games,
although I'm only interested in the top division) was actually due to heavy, localised
snowfalls in parts of East Flanders and Hainaut. There is a photo on the Ardennen website
showing the pitch covered in snow. (I think their ground is on higher land than most other
areas of East Flanders.) Heavy rain is very rarely a problem in Belgium. I actually made
an Eurostar daytrip to Belgium that day (I was aware of a risk of snow, but I hadn't paid
for my ticket as it had been rescheduled, free of charge, by Eurostar from Sun 11th when
the driver had failed to turn up, possible as a result of the chaos caused by the
Buncefield oil depot fire.) I was very fortunate in that Brussels had avoided most of the
snow and my match at Beersel-Drogenbos went ahead on a near-perfect pitch. |
 |
22/12/05 Chris Bedford
The Manor Inne v Stafford Stripes game on Christmas Eve is OFF. Also, regarding
the Western League, the Elmore game has been moved to Friday evening and there is no game
at Street on Saturday (played Dec 13th). I'm still unsure about the kick-off time ay
Shrewton (bulletin 1pm; TFT/website 2pm). |

21/12/05 Bill Berry
Hampshire League: Matches for Christmas Eve are as published in Issue 19 with the
exception of Durley v Winchester 'A' which switches to Tuesday 27th (2.00). Broughton kick

 |
21/12/05 Peter Abbot
In response to Christopher Ashbridge's note, the KVV Ardennen game in question
was actually OFF last Sunday due to heavy rain the day before. A number of other Oost
Vlaanderen games also fell to the weather and it's been decided to re-arrange all of those
for Xmas day too ! So, if you can find a driver, you now have a choice of games ! I've
already "done" KVV Ardennen and anyway, I'm sure that I've got something else on
at home that day, merry christmas. |

Damion Bone, programme editor of AFC Aldermaston (Wessex League Division 3), has asked me
to pass on information re his club's home league game against Tadley Calleva on Monday 2

The fixtures in the Toolstation League for Dec 23/24 appear to have changed again
according to the latest league bulletin but in disagreement with the league website. I'm
confused.
Dec 23: Elmore.
Dec 24: Bradford (1pm), Clevedon, Shrewton (1pm), Street, Westbury.
Having said all that, the Street v Weston St Johns game was played on Dec 13th. |
 |
21/12/05 Chris Bedford
I've seen two Stripes home games this season and both have been played on the third pitch
away from the entrance (which I think from your description would be a 'tick'). Best idea
is to contact the Secretary Malcolm Harratt about which pitch will be used on New Year's
Eve. There will be a programme. |
 |
21/12/05 Steve Broughton
Re Chris Oakley's post - Preston's training ground, where the youth team plays, is the
former Springfields FC ground. Springfields now play at Preston's former training and
youth venue at Preston Sports Arena (no stand there). Other youth grounds with stands or
reasonable facilities (that I know of) include Scunthorpe (Quibell Park Stadium),
Hartlepool (Riverside Complex, next to Durham Cricket Ground), Rushden ('pitch 2' at Nene
Park is enclised with small stands), Swansea City (play at the St Helens rugby and cricket
ground), and Walsall (Birmingham County FC ground). In the Premier Academy League
Southampton use the former Road Sea FC ground and Liverpool's academy has an enclosed
ground. |
 |
21/12/05 Steve Broughton
Re Stafford Rangers Stripes on NY Eve - their ground is listed as 'pitch 3' at Springbank

ground). |

Xmas Day fixture (yes, its true!) KVV Ardennen are at home in the top division of the East
Flanders league at 2.30pm on Sunday 25th Dec, as confirmed on www.footbel.com. Weather
forecast for Belgium looks good at least up to Sat 24th Dec. If anyone who drives to

A last-minute diversion on Saturday, caused by the non-existence of the advertised Queens
Park fixture, saw us at Ponciau Park, home of Rhos Aelwyd in the Welsh National (Wrexham
Area) League. It's a more than decent venue having seen service at a higher level during
the 90's. Two sides are steeply banked, and there is cover for maybe 100 standing, fewer if
the bench seating is utlilsed, on top of the bank above the half-way line providing a
wonderfully elevated perspective. Inside the entrance (behind the goal) is the dressing
room block which also houses a refreshment hut dispensing tea, coffee, soup and snacks. To
our surprise they also had a bundle of matchday programmes available free (there was no
admission charge either) for that day's match against Brickfield Rangers, won 2-1 by the
home team in front of a crowd of 37. Finally just a note to say that there are seats
available in a car travelling from Birmingham on Boxing Day to the matches at Cleator Moor
Celtic (11.00)and Holker OB (15.00). Anyone interested should let me know by contacting
the above e-mail address. |

£3.00. The next home game in the league will be on Saturday 21 January 2006 (2.00 pm
kick-off) against University of Birmingham. |
