In response to Chris Ashbridge. Both Elburton Villa & Holsworthy have applied to move
upto the Step 6 Division of the new South West Peninsula League. They are amongst 29 clubs
from the 39 currently playing in the 2 leagues looking for a space in the 18 team Premier.
The 11 that don't make it, plus the 10 that have not applied will go into the 2 Division
1s, East & West where they will be joined by 11 clubs from the 6 feeders below to make
32, 2 x 16 in each Division. Clubs moving from Western League 1 would go straight into
Premier and reduce the number of new clubs from the feeder leagues. A statement is
expected early in January of the clubs who have applied to move up from the 6 feeder
leagues. |

I was disappointed to miss Steve Coulson's post about Harlow Town kicking off at
1.30pm, as I would certainly have gone there had I known (I prefer to go to early ko's in
the winter months), but the message board must have been updated after I last viewed it on
Fri 23rd Dec. As it was, I decided to go to Elburton Villa, who I saw defeat Holsworthy
7-1 in the Devon League. Elburton issued an excellent programme, which remarked that this
was to be Holsworthy's last ever league visit to Haye Road. Presumably this means that one
of these two clubs will not be applying to join the merger between the SWL and the Devon
Lge next season. Anyone know the full list of clubs applying? By the way, I was a bit
amused to read Peter Chappell's comment that he did not want to "travel too far
because of the fog". Hanley was one of the places considered most likely by the BBC
to be affected by fog on Saturday, although fortunately for him it seems that only Buxton
in the north-west was badly hit!
29/12/06 Reply by Peter Chappell: it was the Hanley Town sec who told me
there was very little fog in the area not the BBC, so if he wants to go by someone from
Bracknall or someone who lives in the area it`s up to him |

On Saturday i didn`t want to go to far because of the fog, so i went about 35
miles to hanley town of the staffordshire county senior league they are current league
champions, the ground is not the easyest to find up an unmade track it would have help
with a signboard, but when you get there it`s a good ground at this level cover on the far
side and clubhouse and changing room in the corner and a tea bar in the club house also
they issue a 24 page programme for all first team matches. On the 13th of jan they play at
home meir ka in the staffs vase for anyone wanting a good day out. |

For the local derby in the West Lancs between the top 2 -Frecketon v Kirkham the
home side produced a programme. The cost being £1 which included admission. The programme
with a full colour cover consised of 24 pages-mostly ads-but they took the trouble to
issue! At Blackpool Mechs last saturday they issued for the game v Ashton-but the
programme was issued for a game against Winsford? |

Harlow Town's game against Sudbury on Saturday 23rd December will now kick off at 1.30 pm.
This is due to floodlighting problems at Barrows Farm. |

The Lincs League fixture for this Saturday (December 23rd) between Horncastle
Town & Skegness Town has now been replaced by the two outstanding Lincs Junior Cup
Fourth Round ties. Harvest v Horncastle & The Fiddler v Skegness (both home teams are
from the Grimsby League) which were called off on each of the previous two Saturdays, will
now take place this weekend BUT at the opposition venues of HORNCASTLE & SKEGNESS.

I'm glad that Barry Davies enjoyed his trip to Brussels. The change in ko time
for the Molenbeek game meant that my intended Brabant Prov 1 game between RWDM and CS
Brainois on the Stade Machtens synthetic pitch that same afternoon had to be moved (FC
Brussels needed to use it for parking, etc apparently) to the far from salubrious Stade
Jesse Owens, a former I believe, Anderlecht training ground and close to the Stade
Constant Vanden Stock. Stade Jesse Owens is a very basic athletics setup positioned
between a golf club and a ski slope, with no cover, portakabin dressing rooms and no bar !
I guess, no real problem as it's another new ground, however it does delay me finishing
off the Brabant Prov 1 until the New Year. |

In response to Graeme Askham the best place to look is on www.fff.fr which gives
details of all football in France. Click on Championnats down the left hand side then
under the relevant league fixtures are shown under Calendriers (for CFA and CFA2 click
Resultats first). Exact dates and kick off times are not always given too far in advance,
especially for the games in higher divisions. If you click on "detail" against
each match it gives the kick off and stadium address - from recent experience be careful
in the lower leagues as this is not always accurate ! Most of the bigger clubs have
websites many of which contain ground locations etc. Except at Marseille which sometimes
sells out and for local derbies or games against PSG/Lyon you should have no trouble with
tickets and you will find prices very reasonable. In addition to the National Leagues 1,2
and National the relevant groups for CFA and CFA2 are CFA : B and CFA2 : C and D. If you
want to go lower click on "Regionaux and Departmentaux" and choose
"Mediterranee".
In answer to Paul Hawkins a team called "James King Blisworth" has appeared in
Div. 2 of the Northants Combination, with the same ground address as the now apparently
defunct Blisworth FC. |

Further to my post of 07/12/06, the Lewes v. Oxford Utd game is no longer

until after the local derby against Eastbourne Borough on New Year's Day. |

Thanks for the info here, and on Tony Kempsters web site. For anyone interested,
there was a game planned at Puerto del Carmen (where we were staying) at 8pm on the Friday
- sure enought the lights were on so we walked there - got there about 7.25pm - saw the
last 20 mins of the first half and the whole of the second half of a juniors game, and
then the first team match kicked off at 9pm - in unseasonal rain - with no cover, so for
some reason my wife decided not to watch the second game, which finished 1-2 On Sunday,
she wanted to go to Teguise market - we got there at 9am, and it was very cold, and vey
windy, so thankfully after an hour or so, she decided watching OM play in the Spanish
Regional league would be more enjoyable - it was, even though it finished 0-0 On Monday
night, as we were driving home from our evening meal, she noticed the floodlights were on
in Tias (about 3 miles up the mountain from PDC) - so I saw a game there which kicked off
at 8.30pm. There was another game due to kick off at the same ground at 10.30pm, but did
not stay for that one. The lights at Tias ground were also on both Tuesday and
Wednesday night, but I thought it unwise to suggest a revisit. We saw other grounds at San
Bartolome, Yaiza, and at least 2 more in the capital of Arrecife - all floodlit |

Last Sunday I was in Spain to watch Real Murcia. I turned up at 'La Condomina' but found
out they have moved to a new ground 'Neuva Condomina' on the outskirts of the town. It
appeared this was their 2nd match at this stadium according to a small brochure. Bus 1
from town to ground took about 10-15 mins but after game to the railway station took
almost 40 mins. On the saturday I watched Hercules (Alicante). In the programme
co-incidentally the previous week they played away to Ciudad de Murcia & this was
still played at 'La Condomina.' I don't know if this ground will remain or not. Anybody
knows. |

Peter, thank you for your info re my weekend in Brussels. I didn't get to Bruges which was
a shame as it turned to be a cracking game apparently (4-4) but did manage to get a superb
seat at Molenbeek for 20 Euros in a game won 1-0 by Anderlecht in stoppage time. I shall
definitely be looking to do more in Belgium. By the way, Christopher, the weather was
superb all weekend! |

Further to the provisional fixtures fro Sat 16th Dec that appeared in thsi week's
magazine, the FA Trophy tie between Lewes and Oxford United kicks off at 2pm and is
all-ticket with no sales on the day. Anyone wanting to buy a seat rather than a standing
ticket will have to do so from Oxford United (once the deadline for season-ticket holders
has passed) as all the seats in the new main stand have been allocated to Oxford! |

A couple of bits of news from the Staffs County Senior League website. The
Secretary of MS Akademik has resigned so contact the Chairman Mykal Whyton on 07837 616730

reinstated following their resignation earlier in the season. |

Regarding Peter Abbott's comments on Sparta Rotterdam, I too hope to revisit the
ground one day. However, having seen photographs of it and having passed it on the train,
I can say that no trace of the original ground remains apart from the ornate main entrance
which used to be behind one goal but is now awkwardly located by the half-way line. The
huge stand that Peter refers to which used to be on the east side has been replaced by a
'wrap-around' stand of the same height as the rest of the stadium. |
 |
3/12/06 Peter Chappell
I would like to recomend to any ground hoppers North Shields of the Northern
League Division 2. What a very friendly club! I went there on Saturday and they could not
do any more to help, and as you wonder round the ground the locals wanted to chat to you.
They are not having the best time at the moment and before Saturday they had lost there
last seven matches, so I hope we brought them some luck as they beat brandon 2-0. Their
keeper was man of the match. |
 |
1/12/06 Peter Abbott
Re. Mike Roe's trip to Rotterdam, I was also in that part of the world last
weekend. I went to the Zaterdag Amateurs game ko 14-30 at VV DOTO Pernis (near
Europoort)score 3-5 followed by the Belgian Antwerpen Prov 1 game at Oud Turnhout 5-0
Saturday evening and the Liege Prov 1 game at Couthuin Sports 5-2 Sunday afternoon.
Regards your visit to Sparta Rotterdam you make no mention of the layout of the ground
since the pitch was turned round 90 degrees a few years ago. I hope to re-visit in due
course, but would be interested in details of significant improvements. I beleive that the
huge stand previously on the side of the ground remains although is now behind a goal ? |

Re Lanzarote 9th/10th Dec. Peter, you appear to have chosen a bad weekend
footballing wise to be in Lanzarote, but looking at the futbolme website there is hope.O
Matitima are playing Leganes on Sunday 10th Dec,in Div 2b Group 1, and are a Lanzarote
based club. They play at the main city stadium in arrecife.Busses stop right outside the
ground.Futbolme is a fantastic website and if you click on the club in question in the
fixture list it will bring you to all the relevant games for that particular team.'click'
on 'datos'above the fixture card and that will give all the club's relevant details. The
'Tercera',or 3rd division group 12 is the one for all Canarian football at this level, but
unluckily no Lanzarote based teams are at home that weekend.Hope this helps. |

Just back from a three game weekend in Holland visiting Roosendall(Juliper Div1)
on Friday 24th Nov.Excelsior Saturday 25th and Sparta v Ajax on the Sunday. All the Clubs
very accomodating with advice and tickets after a quick telephone call.As has already been
mentioned, match tickets on the cheap side as is the train and tram travel. On a map the
Roosendall Stadium is next to the train station...which it is,but theres a 25 minute walk
to get to it because there's no way of getting across the train lines.Tidy ground about 5
years old with a capacity of around 5,000.The Excelsior ground is easier to get to in
Rotterdam on tram number 21.The lads in the Club shop couldnt give you enough bumff on the
Club. This ground is even smaller with a 3,500 capacity but getting a ticket on the day
wasnt a problem against Heracles. Sparta were great on the phone they set aside a few
tickets for the Ajax game even with a capacity of only 11,000.The ground is at the end of
tram service No 8 destination Stangem, and the ground is the last stop by the front door.
Some newspaper/tabac kiosks in town do sell tickets but I found they send them back to the
Club the day before the game to ensure they get sold.Hope I've not gone on too long and
thanks to other posters on the Dutch scene which helped.Great weekend and 15 goals. |

With lots of postponements last Saturday, our original choice of Gregorians in the
Manchester league proved inspired. They play on a 3rd generation artificial pitch at Platt
Lane, Manchester City's training ground. There is also an adjacent pitch, both floodlit,
the lights being used, unneccessarily, for the second half of a 1400 kick off. One to bear
in mind for inclement weather. |

Re Lanzarote 9th/10th Dec It would appear that Lanzarote who play in Segunda B 1
are away over that weekend as are the 2 Lanzarote based side in Tercera Grupo 12 which is
the Canaries group (U Sur Yaiza & Teguise) However if you are there on the 6th Dec
these 2 meet at Teguise on that day. I'm sure there will be Lanzarote based sides in the
Regionales Tenerife but the Futbolme site doesn't give much info on regionales clubs.

Tiln Lane, Retford. The first game there was on Saturday 25th November when Askern Welfare
were the visitors and a programme was produced priced at £1. Upcoming home games are Dec
2nd v Radford (1-30), Dec 30th v Eden Grove (2-00) & Jan 6th v Upton & Harewood
Social (1-30). The Doncaster Senior League has an excellent website courtesy of
www.football.mitoo.co.uk including maps of the member clubs home grounds. |

Barry - FC Brussels play at the Molenbeek ground (Stade Edmond Machtens, full
address on www.footbel.com) but as this is a derby v. Anderlecht, it may not be possible
to buy a ticket on the day. Try the club's website to see if it possible to book on-line.
I'm not sure that planning a trip in winter this far in advance is a good idea until
you've checked the weather forecast a few days beforehand. |

With our original choice of game at Bartley Green called off on Saturday last, we
ended up at University of Birmingham. Anyone intending to visit should note that (a) they
are not producing programmes and (b) they will almost certainly be relegated at the end of
the season as they are unable (due to lack of funding from the University) to erect a
stand and make other necessary changes to maintain their status. They will probably fold
and concentrate on midweek football against other Universities. |

We are off to Lanzarote soon for a week, and will be there for the weekend of
9th/10th December. Any tips on where I can find out who is playing that weekend and where.
I looked on the usual futbolme link and could only find Tenerife and Las Palmas - but that
could be just me not knowing enough Spanish. Any help gratefully received |

The FC Bruges match at the Olympic Stadion is Sunday 10 December ko 13-00 (not
12-00). FC Brussels play at Stade Machtens in Molenbeek (the old RWDM ground) not far from
the centre of Brussels and ko is 18-00 (not 17-00). You've picked more difficult games
than usual to go to so don't be surprised if you have to queue for tickets. I doubt they
will sell out, but if no obvious sales points, head for the secretariat office and
persuade them to let you in (show passport). Good luck. |

I shall be in Belgium on weekend 9/10 December. Can anyone give me advice please
re games at Brugge v Liage at 12.00 and FC Brussels v Anderlecht at 17.00 on the Sunday

From qosfc.com: The twice postponed SFA Youth Cuptie between Queens and Aberdeen

had to be postponed yet again." (lifted from www.qosfc.com) |

A point I forgot to mention (and one whose importance was raised to me by a
'hopper') is that Gillford Park are this season playing on the MAIN pitch, not the side
pitch as was the case last season. |

16/11/06 Chris Freer
You got me there, Chris, as I have to confess that we didn't get a taxi to NAC's
stadium either. A friend of mine who lives in Breda gave use a lift and picked us up after
the game. It just SEEMED like a long way out of town ... maybe he took the scenic route!
He also took us to the site of NAC's old ground, now covered in housing ... no
Highbury-type development here; gone and destined to be forgotten. |
 |
16/11/06 Chris Ashbridge
With regard to Chris Freer's entry - no it's not overlong at all, in fact the
more there is to read the merrier! However, I should add that it is NOT necessary to catch
a taxi to NAC Breda's new stadium. It is within 25-30 mins walk, perhaps less, from the
station and in fact it adjoins the railway line if travelling from the west. |

Gillford Park (Carlisle) will be producing a special one-off programme for our County Cup
derby match with Carlisle City, on December 2nd (k.o. 1.30pm). We are not regular issuers
and this is the first time we will be doing a professional programme for what is the
biggest game in our short history. Due to limited finances, there is just a small print
run so it may be worthwhile contacting us to ensure your copy, either by emailing
website@gillfordparkfc.co.uk or through our website (www.gillfordparkfc.co.uk). |

I thought I'd post a few follow-up notes after my first dip into the Dutch Leagues, just
in case anyone else fancies a weekend away (I'm sorry if it's over-long, but I hope it's
of interest). We eventually settled on Friday Night at NAC Breda v Heerenveen. I phoned
ahead and was told that this wasn't a high risk game and the presence of barely a coach
load of away fans justified that decision. There was a single ticket window - most fans
seem to have club card season tickets - and the ticket admits you to the ground - you sit
where you like. This is a fairly modern stadium and like the others we went to, entry is
via the bar code on your ticket - no old boys collecting money or your ticket stub here.
Past the turnstiles and there is a security check. Enter the ground and you are faced with
a wall where the pitch should be. Climb up the stand stairs and you can see why - the
pitch is raised about ten feet above ground level, creating a natural barrier against
invasions. Hence no fences here. The ground is on the outskirts of town and i suggest you
taxi it.
We moved on to Maastricht as a base for our second match, a visit to Roda (v RKC).
Travelling around Holland by train is easy and relatively cheap. We got a two-person
weekend day ticket for 35 euros which allows travel anywhere in Holland (and first class
at that!). The best station for Roda is Heerlen (as Leon suggested) although we took a
cheap bus to the ground from the station and back, as opposed to taxi. Roda is another new
ground. Tickets are available to casual visitors from the 'Ticketing' counter which we
found open at least 90 minutes before the game. Take your passport. Tickets are cheap but,
as Leon said, you need to buy a (6 Euro) club card too, although they don't actually give
you one (I trust it's in the post). Tickets have a seat number but most fans sat where
they liked. Once again the pitch is surrounded by a moat, so no fences, except for away
fans. Day three saw an early start and another cheap rail deal to Arnhem. As we were going
home later that day we had a luggage problem, and the boxes at the station didn't talk our
language (some strange card names). The Old Holland hotel bar across from the station was
very obliging and we left them there. Free buses run from outside the station and straight
back after the game - it's a doddle! We'd booked our tickets in advance and the girl at
the Information office had them ready in a envelope for us. Automatic entry again and this
time we figured out that, to purchase anything from the food shops inside the ground, you
had to buy cards from a separate booth and use them. This stadium is amazing - and it's
got a roof. You enter more of an auditorium than a football ground. The pre-match
razzamatazz probably isn't a purist's cup of tea but I found the atmosphere tremendous fun
and we were treated to the best game of the weekend, Vitesse beating Utrecht 4-2. The away
fans here are not only behind fences but a huge net too - couldn't have been a great view
of the action. We flew home via Amsterdam and I'm already looking forward to next year's
trip.
One final tip. If booking a hotel via the internet, try and get a positive confirmation.
At our hotel in Maastricht they denied all knowledge of my booking until I produced
transcripts of the e-mails. Only then did they ring around a find us an alternative in a
busy city - a long way to travel just to get stranded. |

Regarding Chris Freer's post, I can report that we did taxi it from Aachen to Roda's
Parkstad Limburg Stadion at a cost of 25 euros. The club shop opens 1 hour before the
match and from there you will need to complete an application for a club card - don't
forget your passport! Admission was 15 euros plus a further 6 euros for the club card. The
match we saw was against Sparta who were were well represented in the away end...and sadly
by a further 100 or so idiots who had somehow gained entry into the Roda end. Twenty
minutes in the Rotterdammers made themselves known causing the kind of violent scenes that
I haven't witnessed at a football match for a long time. The incidents were well reported
in the following day's newspapers. Following the game we took a taxi from the stadion back
to Heerlen station at a cost of 10 euros. For photographs of my trip, go to:

Re Barton Town 'new' ground - article in Monday's Scunthorpe Telegraph says :
Barton Town were forced to postpone Saturday's home game with Heanor when they could not
find a ground to play on. But club spokesman Pete Mitchell said they were "very
hopeful" of Marsh Lane finally being available for their first home game of the
season next Saturday against Gedling."We tried all over to find somewhere to play on
Saturday, but there was nowhere available," he said. "But it's looking good for
this week when we can finally play our first home game. The new pitch has been marked out
and the floodlights are ready, so hopefully everything will be okay." |

Leon Gladwell was right in his post of 29th September when he warned that the
German fixtures can be switched at pretty short notice. Our scheduled match at Aachen on
Saturday 11th November has indeed been switched to the 12th and as we will have moved on
to Arnhem that day, we won't get to see the game. I'd be interested to hear of Leon's
experiences on his trip to Roda in October, as we're due to go there on 11th Nov. We're
also now visiting NAC Breda on the 10th, instead of Germinal. All the clubs say there will
be no problem getting tickets on the day but any advice on potential pitfalls would be
useful. |

TFT readers might be interested in the following tournament taking place in North Cyprus
this month http://www.elfcup. org/ This will comprise of 8 teams from non FIFA recognised
nations and takes place over 1 week. The information has not been available until now in
English which has lead to the short notice of the event. The weather at this time of year
is mild around 20c and travel from the UK is available to the north (Ercan) from
Stanstead, Heathrow or Manchester with Cyprus Turkish Airlines. A cheaper option is to fly
to the south from a large number of airports. Access to the north is easy by foot in
Nicosia or by car from a number of places (not all hire car companies allow this) Public
transport in the north is very cheap and food and drink prices on the whole are vary
reasonable. Hope some from the UK can make it as it is planned for the event to take place
annually. For any other information re: football here or travel to the tournament please

In reply to Harvey Freemantle - I've not been to all the North Lancs grounds yet
but I can recommend Ingleton FC, there's no pitch barrier but there is a decent open

football-specific facilities as such, it's just an open pitch. |

If Scheveningen are at home on the Saturday that would be a good choice as when I

I expect everyone knows this anyway, but it was news to me when I read in last

season. |

According to Oxford United's Website, Oxford have sold all their terrace
allocation for Friday's game at Forest Green, and at 9am this morning (Wednesday) had less
than 200 seats available. I believe tickets were not going on general sale until 9am this
morning (Wednesday). This means Oxford have already sold around 1,500 tickets to season
ticket holders for the game. Having been to Forest Green this influx of away fans will
cause a number of parking problems. I know a number of travellers have tickets for the
game, I would arrive early if you want to park near the ground. |

Anybody looking for a game this Saturday, Dalbeattie Star are at home to Preston
Athletic in the Scottish Qualifying Cup - kick off 3pm. Can anybody advise me which
grounds from the North Lancs and District league play at football specific grounds with at
least dugouts/pitch surrounds... - almost all seem to play at community sports centres and
being a typically poor student based in Scotland I cant investigate myself! As far as I
know there are Millhead, Carnforth, Galgate, Cartmel & District (racecourse?), Kirkby
Lonsdale and Swarthmoor Social Club. Also, just to note I got the new camera and software
to day so the site - www.tnlgd.co.uk - will begin to be properly populated! |

For something to look forward to, does anyone know if I'm likely to get a programme on any
of the remaining West Lancashire League Premier Division grounds? From past experience the
following, but then I would have included Euxton in thet category too: Barnoldswick Town,
Blackrod Town, Fulwood Amateur, Hesketh Bank, Kirkham & Wesham, Turton, plus in lower
leagues: Norcross & W; Croston Sports; Trimpell; Furness Cavs; Thornton. |

Yesterday (Sun 1st Oct) I made an Eurostar day trip to the Lille area to visit ES
Mouvaux (Interregionale Group B) as the listing on www.fff.fr had indicated a different
address, with a synthetic pitch, to that which I had visited for another of their home
games in 2003-04. A look at the old ground (which had a grass pitch) revealed that it was
in the process of being demolished for housing, and as I approached the new ground (about
30 mins walk from Roubaix SNCF/metro, although closer to the tram) I noticed large banners
and posters advertising a friendly match between RC Lens and Valenciennes, which is
apparently going to be played at the unusually early time of 5.30pm on Friday 6th October
for the "ouverture des nouveaux stades". On arrival, I found that the new
complex comprises two grounds - one with a synthetic pitch, railed off with hard standing
all round, but no cover, and a grass pitch with an elevated 500 seater stand. Both are
adjacent but separated by a tall steel mesh fence, and with separate entrances. The match
(won 3-1 by Mouvaux) was played on the synthetic pitch, which is of the same type as
Woodley Sports. The website sates that all the remaining games this season will be played
on it, which may not be correct as I would expect them to start playing on the main
stadium soon. (Incidentally, there were signs that some work on it, mainly to the
pavements, had to be finished before Friday's friendly.) I won't be rushing to visit the
main stadium and will be happy to wait as much as 10 years before doing it, preferably for
a CFA2 or a big French Cup game. I have put some more French ground news on the
noticeboard at www.nonleaguedigest.co.uk |

were most helpful re the ticket situation, indicating that I can buy tickets on the day of
the game at the 'ticketcorner'. If this is not readily apparent I'll follow the route
Stephen suggests, passport at the ready. Any other feedback from Leon after his trip in
October would also be useful, particular re the experience of getiing from Aachen to Roda
by cross-border taxi! |

Following from Dave Woodings' posting, the funeral of Derek Sidebottom will take
place at Lawnswood Crematorium, Otley Road,Leeds. on Thursday 5 October at 2.20 pm. I have
sent Bill a short tribute for inclusion in Traveller. |

In this week's Traveller I believe the story of West Midlands (Regional) League Wyrley
Rangers moving to Groundshare at Great Wyrley may be an error. I have neen assured that
Division Two side Wyrley F.C. are moving to play on the old Harrison's ground but will use
the dressing-rooms at Great Wyrley's ground which is just across the lane. Best to check
if planning a visit. |

To Chris Freer: Re: Germinal Beerschot - I assume that you are on top of the ticket
situation here as you have not specifically asked about them. But in case you are not...
My experience there on a Friday evening last season was that tickets are available on the
day of the game, but only from a rather obscure ticket counter in the main admin block
which you access by walking through a bar area. You will need your passport or they will
not issue a ticket. There was quite a queue when I went - I'd try to get there well before
kick-off time if I were you. |

Barton Town update - the delays and lack of information surrounding the new ground at
Marsh Lane is coming to a conclusion - hopefully ! Two weeks ago I raised the question of
no or little progress being made at the site in six weeks or so, and Barton playing all
their games away to date in the CML. That same week the CML Chairman's weekly review said
Barton would be looking forward to returning home this week. There it was in the Traveller
- a home local derby v Appleby Frodingham. Alas, the fixture disappeared from the CML
website fixture list and never took place, to my knowledge at least. Light at the end of
the tunnel however, tonights Scunthorpe Telegraph says Barton will be playing at home in a
fortnight. Manager Neil Buckley states hot weather at the wrong time and wet weather at
the wrong time has been to blame for the pitch not being ready. He is quoted as saying
they will 'hopefully' be playing on the new ground within two weeks. It seems the CML have
(rightfully in my opinion) supported Barton in their somwhat delayed groundmove. But why
the wall of silence ? See you all there in a fortnight. |

Re Graham Paine visit to North Lincs Oct 14th. Your best chance of Lincs League programmes
would have been Caistor or Skegness (issuing again this season) but both are away in the
Lincs Junior Cup! Check the Humber Premier website for fixtures, but if at home, Easington
always issue a super programme (better hire a boat to save a long journey over the Humber
Bridge!). LSS Lucarly's issued last season in the CML but I am unsure whether they are
issuing this season, where they are fielding teams in both the Lincs & Humber Prem. |

My pleasure Chris. One word of warning however - don't forget that the Bundesliga fixtures
have yet to be 'fixed' meaning the Aachen game with Nurnburg could in theory be brought
forward to Friday 10th or indeed put back to the Sunday. My game v Energie has yet to be
confirmed too although if switched from the Saturday, I'll probably look for a non-league
game in Limburg province. We will be staying in the 'Best Western Maastricht' which is
pretty reasonable at around 50 euros per night which includes breakfast. Check out
www.bookings.nl for Dutch accommodation. Lastly, a few taxi numbers for you - the fare
should be around 20-25 euros: 0049 24 122222 / 0049 24 166666 / 0049 24 19973333. These
are all based in Aachen. |

Thanks to Chris & Leon for the very useful information re Holland, especially
for the additional notes re getting from Aachen to Roda (Kerkrade) which we're also
planning to do (taxi it is, then!) The Roda match is - by coincidence - also against RKC
so it looks like it shouldn't be a problem. Our Friday night game is Germinal Beerschott
and Sunday at Vitesse Arnham. NAC we may leave for the next time. Leon, any
recommendations re accommodation in Maastricht? |

I am very sorry to have to report that we have lost another senior and well
respected Traveller. I understand Derek Sidebottom (from Rothwell near Leeds) was found
dead in bed this morning. I have no further details at the moment but I gather a PM will
be necessary before funeral arrangements etc. can be concluded. We have lost a real
gentleman at the relatively young age of 62 - Derek was always helpful to everybody and I
have never known him to be spiteful towards anyone. |

I was interested to read Rod Allsworth's recent comments about the lack of
programmes at Euxton Villa and Coppull United. This season I am intending to watch a home
game at all 16 Aegon West Lancashire League Premier Division clubs. As I write I've
visited 5, and so far 2 games have had programmes. The two, Charnock Richard and Dalton
United, both appear to produce programmes on a regular basis. The three clubs not
producing programmes have been Blackpool Wren Rovers, Euxton Villa, and Fleetwood Hesketh.
For something to look forward to, does anyone know if I'm likely to get a programme on any
of the remaining West Lancashire League Premier Division grounds? |

27/9/06 Loen Gladwell
With regards to Roda, I phoned the club a few weeks back and like with all Dutch
clubs, I got an English speaking person who informed me that tickets can be purchased on
the day (at least for my visit v Sparta). I would certainly advise calling but assuming
you are not going to watch Roda v one of PSV, Feyenoord, AZ or Ajax, you shouldn't have
any trouble as the stadium holds 20,000 and they rarely get anywhere near that. I had no
problems in reserving a ticket at NAC (for the derby v Willem II) but I did phone them to
confirm. The only Eredivisie club I had had any difficulties with regarding reservations
of tickets have been AZ who continue to sell out their new stadium. For the record, my
trip in October will see me take in games from my base in Maastricht at Fortuna, Aachen
(followed by a 15km taxi ride to Roda), MVV and either a Bundesliga or Belgian Cup fixture
on the Sunday. |

27/9/06 Andy Molden
The Forest Green Rovers v Oxford United game on Friday 6th October, is all
ticket. No tickets will be available on the day. |
 |
27/9/06 Chris Ashbridge
To answer Chris Freer's question, getting into Roda JC's new stadium was easy as
they were selling tickets to allcomers, with no proof of identity needed. However, the
opponents were RKC Waalwijk and the crowd was obviously going to be a long way below
capacity. It was 4 years ago so things may have changed. As for NAC Breda, I visited their
new stadium even longer ago (in 1997) and had to show my passport in order to get a
temporary membership card. I was then subjected to a volley of verbal abuse by a steward
as I entered the ground, presumably because he didn't think much of casual visitors.
Hopefully things have changed at NAC since then. |

I am going up to the Grimsby area on the weekend of October 14th and would like to do a
game in either the Humber Premier League or Lincolnshire League but want to ensure that
the club I visit is a programme issuer. Can anyone provide a definitive list of programme
issuers for these leagues or failing that is there a website for either league? |
 |
25/9/06 John Mills
Further to John Mills' recent posting, programme collectors may be interested to
learn that when I visited St. Day on Saturday, the club issued a programme for the visit
of league leaders Illogan R.B.L. It was a fairly basic, folded A4 black & white sheet,
but included full team details plus club notes. I don't think the club intends to issue on
a regular basis just yet, but it was certainly an unexpected bonus for me. Essentially, it
was free but donations to club funds were gratefully accepted. Incidentally, the club
address appears to be Vogue Playing Field, Vogue Hill, Vogue, St. Day. As John has
indicated, the impressive "pavilion" (St. Day Community Enterprise Centre) is
quite a feature! |

While attending the HOP game at Bournemouth Sports on Saturday a number of
travellers queried if the pitch had been moved at anytime. I had previously been to the
complex to see AFC Bournemouth Youth in 1992, and had taken photo's, also I have
ascertained other photos of the complex. The pitch would appear to be in the same place on
all the photo's though in 1992 their were at least two sets of open seating around the
pitch. What has changed is the all weather pitch's between the clubhouse and Bournemouth
Sports pitch. It appears to have gone from an all weather surface to a Astroturf type
pitch and has been enclosed in a much more secure nature than it previously was. The
floodlights on the Astroturf pitch are in the old photos. Also the area by the Astroturf
pitch's may well have been leveled, as I do remember part of the complex having old Golf
bunkers on it, I believe it may have originally been a gold course ?. |

Yesterday i went to Bewdley now they are back on there own ground it`s one and
half miles out of town centre, if coming from kidderminster you enter the town over the
river seven bridge left of the church which is stright in front of you an left again and
just keep going, the gound is on your left there is no bus that goes near the ground also
if walking there is no footpath for the larst half mile and no street lights. At the
ground they have put up floodlights built a stand wnich should hold 200 and they are just
starting to build new changeing rooms in the corner next to the pitch they issue a very
good 24 page programme. the game i saw they beat bustleholme 4-0 but it could have been 8 |

With regard to the recent posts from Leon Gladwell and Chris Ashbridge re Roda,
do either of you guys know if you can get tickets 'on the gate' for their matches or is it
wise to book in advance. I'm visiting the Netherlands in November and hoping to see a
number of games. Vitesse Arnham have already responded to my e-mail and told me that,
although there is a club card scheme in operation, visitors from overseas are exempt and
can buy tickets by e-mailing their requirement in advance. However I have been
unsuccessful in getting a response from either Roda or NAC Breda. Obviously I can ring the
clubs and take a chance on the person on the other end speaking English (I know they
usually do in Holland) but any prior advice from fellow travellers would be most welcome. |

Since the start of the season I have had chance to visit the new clubs (for me)
in the two senior leagues below the South Western League. Paper-chasers need not read on
as no programmes were in evidence at any of the matches I attended! LANREATH - See item in
last weeks Traveller LIFTON - Already covered by Trevor Pike on this board ST COLUMB
MAJOR - Has the feel of an established ground, tucked behind the narrow streets in the
centre of this attractive town. When looking for the turning to the ground, look out for
parking signs as a small public car park adjoins. Two sides of the ground are tightly
enclosed, with some length of permanent bench seating attached to the enclosing walls, and
the broad steps to the dressing/tea rooms at one end offer a small terrace. Refreshments
at half time, no admission collected but a raffle, which I won! ST DAY - Easy to find on
the road into the village from the Redruth side. The pitch is set slightly below the car
park, railed on three sides and served well by a fine modern clubhouse with first-floor
bar (with Sky) and viewing balcony. Admission was s collected of £2 including
raffle. Sharing with cricket, home fixtures only began on 9th Sep, when having gone
0-2 down to Mullion against the run of play shortly after half-time the home side
recovered to win 6-2! TAMARSIDE - Playing at the old old (pre-2000) Plymouth
Parkway ground in Ernesettle Lane, the club have the advantage of floodlights and are
playing a number of midweek fixtures. The Parkway Social Club (which pre-dated Parkway FC)
still exists at the top of the very steep banking behind one goal, as do two areas of
standing cover from the previous incumbents days. The football club has parking by
the dressing rooms 100 yards further down the hill from the Club, and no one who had come
for the football seemed to bother climbing the steps to it before the match or at
half-time, despite the lack of spectator facilities pitchside - with the karaoke night
being an added deterrent!. Although seeming a very well-run club playing wise at all
levels - the Chairman and Reserve Team Manager is Nicky Marker formerly of Blackburn and
Plymouth - there was a distinct lack of spectators. Ignoring drinkers outside the Social
Club, Camelford had perhaps two-thirds of a crowd of around f! ifteen. No admission was
collected. |

Just had a look in at Barton Town and alas - no further progress since I reported
on Marsh Lane around six weeks ago. Now, as then, the new ground simply has grass and a
wooden fence. The team, champions of the CML last season, has lost its best players,
playing every game away so far this season and it seems with little chance of a home game
for several months. The Scunthorpe Telegraph continues to report on matches but nothing
groundwise. I cannot find anything on CML websites and cannot access the league
messageboard. What is going on ? Perhaps a couple of well known groundhopping CML league
officials (who regularly use this website) could update us ? |

In response to Leon's query, I used Kerkrade station but it is a rather long walk
(about 40- 45 mins. This entails walking past the old ground which will be interesting if
it is still in existence. On my visit, a heavy shower prompted me to catch a local bus
from close to the pld ground to a point near the new one, if that's of any help. It is
possible that Heerlen station might also be walkable, but not having checked the map I
can't make any comment on this yet. |

On Saturday I saw Leicestershire Senior League newboys FC Braunstone Victoria
take on league leaders Saffron Dynamo, to be fair this was not my first choice game, but
due to numberous traffic problems in the Oxford area time only allowed me to reach
Leicester. The clubs address is Braunstone Park, but as this park is over a mile long
finding the ground location was a test in it's self. The club play in the top corner of
the park off of Cort Crescent, near the junction with the A47 Hinckley Road. On my A to Z
street atlas the area is marked as Little Gorse. There are three pitchs in the complex,
end to end on, all three are railed. Victoria play on the pitch nearest the dressing rooms
at the top end of the complex. The dressing rooms are in the Braunstone Grove Young
Peoples Centre, which is behind the top goal of the ground. The club do not issue
programmes and their were no refreshments available at the ground except for a cold drinks
machine in the dressing room area. In fact until I informed the groundsman that the game
would attrach a crowd there were no toilet facilites available for spectators ! As
previously stated the pitch is railed and has brand new dug-outs on the Cort Crescent side
of the ground, sadly these have only been in situ for a month or so and have already been
smashed up !. Along this side of the ground runs overgrown grass banking, in fact in wet
weather you could us the pavement on Cort Crescent as hardstanding as is is less than 10
yards from the touch line. By chance midway through the first half an ice cream van pulled
up next to the half-way line and did a roaring trade as an adhoc teabar. The rest of the
ground is just flat standing with a path behind the bottom goal, and a track running a few
yards back from the rail on the far side. Behind the top goal is a small enclosed all
weather surface, with a curved wall which you could sit on in dry weather. The game itself
was end to end stuff as both teams defended unbeaten records. A good crowd of over 80 saw
a nil-nil first half, the second seemed to be going the same way until Saffron started to
get on top, they took the lead on the hour and then wrapped up victory with a goal deep
into injury. The game was well ref by Mr Piper, who I was told is the father of Matt Piper
who has played for Leicester City and Sunderland. As a foot note I notice newly named
Syston Fosse Imps play at the same address as the old Fosse Imps, if I remember correctly
this area was rather large and contained two railed off pitch's, one about 100 yards from
the dressing rooms, with a cover on the halfway line, and toilets that resembled a stable.
With another railed pitch even further away, I know travellers have seen games on both
pitch's. Does anyone know where in the complex Syston Fosse are playing ?. |

As a footnote Oxford United are playing all their home Reserve games at Didcot
Town this season, kick-off 7pm and where ever possible on a Monday night. £5 admission,
free teamsheet. All midweek Youth team games in F.A. Youth Cup etc, will be played at
Oxford City (Court Place Farm). The clubs training ground though is the 2nd and 3rd
pitch's at Milton United !. |

Many of you will have seen the article by Steve Hardy in this week's magazine.
Although I have not yet visited Holt United, I do have an old map of the town and it is
clear that there has been a lot of housing development in recent years. On my map,
Woodfield Road is shown as a cul-de-sac called Kelling Close, located off Kelling Road. It
seems that Kelling Close was extended and renamed as Woodfield Close. This may account for
the confusion over where the ground is - perhaps some sources have referred to the ground
as Kelling Close, or perhaps the club have moved to a new ground and the old one has not
yet been built on. Is there anyone (perhaps someone living in Norfolk) who can provide the
full story? |

Thanks to Peter Ford and Mick Burt for their help regarding Tongham's temporary
ground. Having just looked at a map of the area, I have now realised that Queens Avenue is
actually halfway between Farnborough and Aldershot, which explains my earlier confusion
over which town it is in! |

Yes John this ground was used by Leyland Motors for their Lancs Comb and N.W.C.L
games and there was a Leyland Athletic who played in the Preston and District League in
75/6 which Leyland DAF then joined this league in 91/92, the secretary for all these teams
was a Mr J.A. Hickson! |

A visit to Plymouth Parkway last Saturday revealed that Goonhavern seem to be
having off field problems at the moment. Parkway had been due to play a home game v.
Goonhavern on the previous Saturday but Goonhavern pulled out of the fixture on the day of
the match due to being unable to raise a side. In his programme notes the Parkway Chairman
stated that he was aware of the difficulties Goonhavern were facing at the moment and
hoped that they could be resolved without the club having to leave the league. |

Is the Lancashire FA ground at Thurston Road, Leyland the same pitch that was used by
Leyland Motors when they were members of the North West Counties Football League? |

Along with several other travellers, was at Tongham's game on Saturday, in Queens Avenue,
Aldershot - next to the military stadium. I have paid £2 for a programme that hopefully
will arrive shortly. The home secretary indicates they will be there until late October,
or even November. The Westfield officials tell me they have so far played FA ties at
Woking, but no home league games yet, and will be some time before they can play games at
their own ground. I suspect that they will be playing lots of midweek games later in the
season, rather than playing at another ground. |

Forest Green Rovers. I generally agree with Andy. I went to Taverners for a County League
game, and the pitch must overlap the current FGR pitch. It would also clearly overlap the
new Taverners pitch. My memory suggests that the pitch was not as close to the buildings
as it is now, and was angled slightly, so as the new Taverners pitch is more like 70
degrees, rather than 90 to the new one. My attitude is pragmatic - there are certainly two
seperate clubs on seperate grounds - I have done one (Taverners) and so I went back to
tick the other (FGR). The same rules would have applied to Weston-Super-Mare/Westland if I
had been to the old Westland - again the old playing surface overlaps both new grounds. I
know different people have different views on the matter, so I am hoping this helps to
clarify the position for others to make up their own mind. |
